5K
Doing a 5K run can add a new level of challenge and interest to your exercise program. A 5K run is 3.1 miles but don’t be afraid of the distance – it’s great for new runners, experienced runners, and walkers, too. You can get ready for a 5K run with a Go the Extra Mile Challenge. Encourage family and friends to join you!

NNS 5K FAQs
This year the event will be called the Newport News Shipbuilding 5K (NNS 5K) which was the name of the event in the years prior to 2018. The name brings recognition to the largest supporter of the event, Newport News Shipbuilding.
Registration is required for the event. You can register at www.myquadmed.com/NNS5K. The event registration will cost $15 for an adult and $10 for a youth (12 and under) and includes a t-shirt.
Yes. This year’s race will support Feeding America in hopes of ender hunger across the US and at home. Feeding America is a United States–based nonprofit organization that is a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that feed more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based agencies. You can choose to give nationally, locally, or both. During registration you will have the opportunity to give monetarily to the National Food Bank. During packet pick-up and day-of the event you can bring canned goods to give to the Peninsula Area Virginia Food Bank.
The NNS 5K is not an officially timed event because it is a FUN run/walk. However, there is a digital clock at the finish line that will start at the beginning of the race. For participants that are interested in knowing their time, you are encouraged to keep track of your time by using a personal timing device during the race.
The NNS 5K focus is to create an atmosphere that is fun and promotes a healthy, noncompetitive event, for your family, friends, and co-workers. We want to reach all Shipbuilders regardless of fitness abilities and feel having the race officially timed detracts from our goal. As a result, we are able to keep the registration fee affordable and lower than other races in the Hampton Roads area.
Baby joggers and strollers are allowed on the racecourse and are required to start behind all other race participants. It is your responsibility to make sure your jogger/stroller does not impede other participants and you must take precaution to ensure your safety, your child’s safety, and the safety of race participants around you.
For the safety of you and other racers, pets are not permitted at Victory Landing Park or on the NNS 5K race course.
There will be parking on city streets as well as the VASCIC garage (there will be no parking allowed in the reserved spaces on the ground level or the roundabout in front of the VASCIC building) and the B901 garage located off 29th and Washington Ave.
Participants will be able to pick up their t-shirt and race bib before the event, as well as on race day. More information about location of packet pick-ups will be announced closer to the event. T-shirts that are not picked up before the race can be picked-up after the race during designated days and times.
Since the NNS 5K is a FUN run/walk and not officially timed, finisher results are not provided.
There will be an awards ceremony once all race participants have crossed the finish line. Awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in each category: Overall Male, Overall Female, Youth Male 12 & Under, and Youth Female 12 & Under. The NNS 5K Challenge Cup will also be awarded.
Each year the Challenge Cup trophy is awarded to the division with the highest percent of friends and family that register. During registration you will have to supply the department that you’re associated with in order for you, your family member or friend to get counted towards the Challenge Cup competition.
Friends and family may participate but must register first.
