Hello 5K support squad!
The sun was shining as over 250 5K participants lined up for the event on Saturday. The City of Newport News, NNS and QuadMed hosted a safe and fun event. A special shout out to Sheryce Moore (NNS Community Relations) and her volunteer team who helped make the race possible.
With a time of 19 minutes and 28 seconds, the first-place finisher soared across the finish line. Everyone gave the 3.1 miles their best shot with finishers crossing the line with their friends and family by their side. The excitement started at the pre-race expo where participants mingled with shipyard and community vendors while engaging in meaningful conversations about their health and well-being.
$163.00 and 257 lbs. of food were donated to the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank, equating to a little over 700 healthy meals that can be provided to help end hunger. Jason Ward was the Grand Marshal of the event and he spoke about the importance of health and wellbeing in helping employees and their families live their best lives and how this is critical to the success of the organization. Registration was 5% higher than last year, helping us reach our sign-up goal.
Next steps include collecting the results of the post-event summary for a planning team debrief and choosing a date for next year’s race! We can’t wait to see you all out there again. -Sarah Kozak/Wellness Coach

The race will be delayed until Saturday October 7 due to unsafe weather conditions forecasted for the original date (September 23). All registrants will be automatically transferred to the new event date. Questions? Please contact: HIIWellness@quadmedical.com.
This year we are continuing our support of the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank. We will be doing a canned food drive before and during at the event.
If prefer to donate money in lieu of or in addition to canned food, every dollar donated helps us provide 4 meals to those in our community struggling with food insecurity. To give, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bewellforlife5k
If you’d like to give to the national cause, you can visit Feeding America: https://www.feedingamerica.org/

NNS 5K FAQs
This year the event will be called the Newport News Shipbuilding 5K (NNS 5K) which was the name of the event in the years prior to 2018. The name brings recognition to the largest supporter of the event, Newport News Shipbuilding.
Registration is required for the event. You can register at www.myquadmed.com/NNS5K. The event registration will cost $15 for an adult and $10 for a youth (12 and under) and includes a t-shirt.
Yes. This year’s race will support Feeding America in hopes of ender hunger across the US and at home. Feeding America is a United States–based nonprofit organization that is a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that feed more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based agencies. You can choose to give nationally, locally, or both. During registration you will have the opportunity to give monetarily to the National Food Bank. During packet pick-up and day-of the event you can bring canned goods to give to the Peninsula Area Virginia Food Bank.
The NNS 5K is not an officially timed event because it is a FUN run/walk. However, there is a digital clock at the finish line that will start at the beginning of the race. For participants that are interested in knowing their time, you are encouraged to keep track of your time by using a personal timing device during the race.
The NNS 5K focus is to create an atmosphere that is fun and promotes a healthy, noncompetitive event, for your family, friends, and co-workers. We want to reach all Shipbuilders regardless of fitness abilities and feel having the race officially timed detracts from our goal. As a result, we are able to keep the registration fee affordable and lower than other races in the Hampton Roads area.
Baby joggers and strollers are allowed on the racecourse and are required to start behind all other race participants. It is your responsibility to make sure your jogger/stroller does not impede other participants and you must take precaution to ensure your safety, your child’s safety, and the safety of race participants around you.
For the safety of you and other racers, pets are not permitted at Victory Landing Park or on the NNS 5K race course.
There will be parking on city streets as well as the VASCIC garage (there will be no parking allowed in the reserved spaces on the ground level or the roundabout in front of the VASCIC building) and the B901 garage located off 29th and Washington Ave.
Participants will be able to pick up their t-shirt and race bib before the event, as well as on race day. More information about location of packet pick-ups will be announced closer to the event. T-shirts that are not picked up before the race can be picked-up after the race during designated days and times.
Since the NNS 5K is a FUN run/walk and not officially timed, finisher results are not provided.
There will be an awards ceremony once all race participants have crossed the finish line. Awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in each category: Overall Male, Overall Female, Youth Male 12 & Under, and Youth Female 12 & Under. The NNS 5K Challenge Cup will also be awarded.
Each year the Challenge Cup trophy is awarded to the division with the highest percent of friends and family that register. During registration you will have to supply the department that you’re associated with in order for you, your family member or friend to get counted towards the Challenge Cup competition.
Friends and family may participate but must register first.
