Staying active during the pandemic

Physical activity plays a critical role in physical and mental well-being. Through this pandemic, closures, capacity limits and social distancing have added a degree of difficulty when it comes to staying active, but there are ways you can maintain physical activity while staying safe and following CDC guidelines.

Ways to stay active outdoors

While many of these are dependent on your current climate, you can try:

  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Going for a scenic walk
  • Rollerblading
  • Sledding
  • Cross country skiing
  • Ice skating
  • Non-contact sports, including tennis, sprinting or badminton
  • Water based activities, such as surfing, kayaking or paddle boarding
  • Exercising in an open space with a friend or family member

When you choose to maintain your physical activity indoors, you greatly decrease your chances of encountering germs and other individuals. Being confined to your home during this time does not limit your ability to continue being active. Get creative and don’t let being indoors become an excuse.

Regular exercise and physical activity can lead to stronger immune function, better sleep, and decreased anxiety and stress, which are all essential during a pandemic. Whether you decide to be active indoors or outdoors, remember to stay safe and follow CDC guidelines.
