Philosophy of Care

BOB CARROLL
Liscensed Therapist

My counseling style is warm and interactive.
I believe in treating anyone with respect,
sensitivity, and compassion, and I don’t believe
in stigmatizing labels. My approach combines
cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, psychodynamic
and rational-emotive counseling. I will tailor our
dialogue and treatment plan to meet your unique
and specific needs. It takes courage to seek for a
more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first
steps towards a change. If you are ready to take
that step I am here to support and empower you.

Who can use Behavioral Health services?

Behavioral health services are available to all employees regardless of insurance.

What to expect from your behavioral health session.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel ashamed for seeking help. If you are unfamiliar with counseling, we’ll guide you through the experience so you will know what to expect and feel more comfortable taking this first step.

Your conversation will be kept in the strictest confidentiality. This is a special, unique type of conversation in which you can say exactly what you feel, in total honesty, without worrying that you’re going to hurt someone’s feelings, damage a relationship, or be penalized in any way. Anything you want—or need—to say is okay.

QuadMed’s Behavioral Health visits can be conducted virtually or over the phone. During your first session, your therapist may ask:

• What brought you to therapy?

• What are your symptoms?

• What do you feel is causing stress in your life?

Your therapist may also inquire about your history, including your childhood, education, relationships (family, romantic, friendships), current living situation, and any substance abuse. At this time, you are welcome to ask questions that you may have about the treatment process and talk about your own expectations for it.

By the end of your first session, you and your therapist will come to an agreement about the length of your treatment, methods to be employed, and patient confidentiality.

Your treatment plan will be developed to serve as a roadmap for future sessions. In general, you’ll meet again to discuss what’s been happening since your last session and any progress you’ve made toward your goals.

Your therapist may give you homework to complete during or after a session and he or she will invite you to share feelings about the assignments, such as where you may have gotten frustrated, stuck, or off-track.

When you’ve met your treatment goals and both you and your therapist feel you’re in a healthy place, you may have a conversation about discontinuing sessions. Your therapist will discuss ongoing support and resources with you.

Remember: Therapy is not a set timeline, and everyone has their own path to healing.

We get it. Talking to people about how you feel isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

At QuadMed, we've removed barriers to ensure the support you need is always within reach. And to empower you to feel good talking about and managing your emotional health.

behavioral HEALTH MYTH VS FACT

MYTH

Mental health problems are uncommon.

FACT

In 2001, the World Health Organization (WHO)Trusted Source estimated that “1 in 4 people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives.” Currently mental disorders are among the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide.

MYTH

Addiction is a lack of willpower.

FACT

Researchers found that a lack of willpower was not the deciding factor when it came to beating addiction. Recovery is dependent on developing strategies to preserve willpower by controlling the environment.

MYTH

People with mental health conditions cannot work.

FACT

It is true that someone living with a particularly severe mental health condition might be unable to carry out regular work. However, the majority of people with mental health issues can be as productive as individuals without mental health disorders.

MYTH

Children don't experience mental health problems.

FACT

Even very young children may show early warning signs of mental health concerns. These mental health problems are often clinically diagnosable, and can be a product of the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors. Half of all mental health disorders show first signs before a person turns 14 years old, and three quarters of mental health disorders begin before age 24.

MYTH

Mental health problems are permanent.

FACT

A mental health diagnosis is not necessarily a “life sentence.” Each individual’s experience with mental illness is different. Some people might experience episodes, between which they return to their version of “normal.” Others may find treatments — medication or talking therapies — that restore balance to their lives.

MYTH

Therapy and self-help are a waste of time.

FACT

Treatment for mental health problems varies depending on the individual and could include medication, therapy, or both. Many individuals work with a support system during the healing and recovery process.

MYTH

Having a mental illness means you are “crazy.”

FACT

It means you have an illness with challenging symptoms — the same as someone with an illness like diabetes. While mental illness might alter your thinking, destabilize your moods or skew your perception of reality, that doesn’t mean you are “crazy.” It means you are human and are susceptible to sickness and illness.

MYTH

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is only a military man’s disease.

FACT

Anyone can have PTSD. A rape or sexual assault victim, a domestic abuse victim, a survivor of a natural disaster, someone who’s suffered a loss or even a person who did not face any violence or physical threats themselves directly, but happened to witness someone else who did.

Eligibility statement: Primary health services are available to employees, spouses and dependents ages 2 and older covered by a county health plan. Behavioral health services are available to all employees regardless of insurance.
